This recipe is from an old newspaper cutout. The date is unknown but on the back is a picture of a young Peggy McIntyre, an actress from the 1940s and 50s. Her last role in a movie was in 1954, and she also had a part in a Lone Ranger TV episode in the early 1950s. Hi Yo Silver! Here's the recipe, although I don't quite get why it's called a student's ragout; maybe because it's a one pot meal.
5 medium sized potatoes
3 medium sized carrots
3 medium sized onions
1 pound steak, cut thin
6 sliced bacon
salt and pepper
1 cup cold water
Prepare this in a large skillet or saucepan that has a lid.
Wash, peel and thinly slice potatoes.
Wash, scrape and slice carrots.
Peel and slice onions.
Cut the steak into small strips.
Cut bacon slice in two.
Now place all the ingredients in the skillet as follows:
First spread the bacon all over the pan. then the steak in a layer over the bacon. then the onions and carrots. Top it with potatoes and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Put on fire and start cooking; after 3 minutes add a cup of hot water and cook until vegetables are done.
